In anticipation of rolling out our "Play and Learn" (PAL) islands the next few months, we will start making site visits to a few children's museums (CMs).
The journey started today with some staff visiting the studio of the fabricator who is making the PAL islands as well as a visit to the San Jose Children's Museums.
Other CMs on the schedule include Pretend City in Orange County, Kidspace in Pasadena, the Chino Youth Museum, the La Habra Children's Museum, the Denver Children's Museum and the Minnesota Children's Museum.
The idea is to get as many staff out to see these places and then blog about them right here.
So let the journey begin!

I really appreciate the opportunity to see these other museums. It's the golden opportunity to spy - I mean learn - from these other folks.
ReplyDeleteWe can see what is working there and what isn't. I think it also gives an idea of what kind of behaviors and interactions we might see between parents and adults.
The trends I've noticed with all of our visits to these locations so far: everyone has a water exhibit, block building exhibit, some form of dig/sand exhibit, and some link to cultures.
Everyone presents it in a slightly different way - very interesting! It does make me feel like our group got "it" "on the money" with the themes we selected!
Thanks for the opportunity!
I've tried to post a comment now for 3 days having issues with my cookie settings and what profile to use to post my comment. Anyway, hope this finally posts. I enjoyed our field trip to Pretend City. It was very inspiring to see first hand what we're going to be in for. Children's Museums have changed a lot from what I remember them to be when my daughter was younger as well when they used to be more like Children's Art Museums. Our guide was the best since she was involved in its inception. I loved the creative/fun donor wall. I thought overall the design could have been better - it didn't wow me. It could have been 10 years old - I wouldn't have known they had just been open 7 months. Some of the murals were too washed out and not that interesting. The kids were enjoying themselves and there was plenty for them to do. It was "controlled chaos." Thank you for the experience.
